Built for Chromate Conversion Applications

Alodine treatment tanks are built for chromate conversion applications: the chemical process that creates a protective layer on metal surfaces, typically aluminum. The task is fast and runs at ambient temperatures, but the process tank still has to be built correctly, sized for the parts, chemically compatible, and configured for the pre-clean, deoxidizing, rinse, and post-rinse stages that accompany Alodine treatment

For applications subject to standard MIL-DTL-5541 for aluminum chromate conversion coating in aerospace, defense, and electronics, the process and the equipment it runs on both need to be correctly specified and documented. Protank builds custom polypropylene Alodine treatment tanks made to your specific chemical workflow, the sizes of the parts handled, and line sequence, whether you need a single treatment tank or a complete multi-stage line.

This surface treatment is applied to improve specific properties of the metal and achieve measurable performance outcomes. Treatment goals:

01

Corrosion Resistance

Alodine processed metal components are equipped to better withstand rust and degradation, effectively extending service life in exposed, harsh environments.
02

Electrical Conductivity

Treated surfaces receive protection benefits while maintaining high levels of electrical conductivity. Both necessary for aluminum components used in electronics, aerospace, and defense applications.
03

EMI / RFI Shielding

The conductive chromate layer supports shielding from electromagnetic and radio frequency interference in aluminum enclosures and housings; commonly specified for avionics and communications equipment.
04

Surface Preparation

Alodine treated surfaces provide a chemically active base that significantly improves adhesion of primers, paints, and topcoats to produce more consistent, durable finishes with less risk of coating delamination.
05

Environmental Resistance

Alodine processed components have increased resistance against temperature cycling, humidity exposure, salt water, and UV degradation that would accelerate corrosion and coating failure on untreated aluminum.

Where Alodine Treatment Gets Specified

Protank's custom Alodine treatment tanks are built to match the different needs of industries and businesses with a custom fit solution that meets the highest performance standards.

Aerospace

Alodine treatment is a standard surface treatment requirement across aerospace manufacturing, where safety, durability, and precision are mandated by regulatory frameworks and the demands of real world operating conditions. By building corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity into aluminum components of aircraft structures, landing gear, avionics enclosures, and more, chromate conversion coating plays a direct role in long term reliability. Tanks built for aerospace applications frequently support MIL-DTL-5541 and AMS 2473/2474 qualified process lines, covering both Class 1A and Class 3 configurations. Custom tank sizing accommodates everything from small precision hardware to large structural assemblies.

Electronics

In the electronics industry, Alodine treatment is commonly specified for aluminum housings, enclosures, and chassis components where the chromate layer must preserve electrical conductivity and support electromagnetic frequency interference (EMI) / radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding; requirements that an anodized or painted surface alone cannot meet. Custom tank sizing accommodates the range of part geometries common to electronics manufacturing, from small connector housings to large rack enclosures.

Military & Defense

The military and defense sector utilizes Alodine treatment tanks to produce components that must meet the most demanding durability standards, including MIL-DTL-5541 compliance. From battlefield technology to transport equipment, avionic enclosures to structural aluminum, treated components can better endure real world exposure and maintain their functionality and reliability.

Maritime & Naval

Saltwater and maritime environments pose unique challenges to metal components. Custom made and custom sized Alodine treatment tanks can be used to apply corrosion resistant coatings for protecting marine equipment, watercraft systems, and ship hardware from humidity and salt exposure, greatly extending their working life.

Automotive

In the automotive industry, Alodine treatment tanks are used in enhancing both the performance and appearance of various parts. The tanks help prepare lightweight aluminum components for smooth, durable paint finishes while strengthening their resistance to daily exposure stress for improved vehicle longevity and visual appeal.

Renewable Energy

Alodine surface treatment is used in the renewable energy sector to protect the components of solar panels, wind turbines, and other systems from the continuous outdoor exposure. These parts with an added corrosion resistant coating provides the durability and electrical conductivity necessary for sustainable energy systems and infrastructure.

Construction & Architecture

Alodine treated aluminum is often used in construction and architecture as part of building facades, curtain wall systems, storefront framing, structural elements, and decorative features. The treatment prepares aluminum for a finish that is long lasting and visually appealing, especially in outdoor elements that will be exposed to weather.

Industrial Machinery

Heavy duty industrial machinery operates in some of the most demanding working conditions. This sometimes requires parts that are more resistant to corrosive damage and environmental exposure. Alodine treatment tanks help prepare the aluminum components of machines and equipment so they can perform reliably while withstanding the extended stressors of industrial use.

Rail & Public Transportation

Aluminum structural components, interior panels, and exterior assemblies in rail and public transportation vehicles require corrosion protection and paint adhesion that can hold up under continuous weather exposure and frequent cleaning cycles. Alodine treatment provides both through a chemically active, corrosion resistant base layer before a topcoat that extends the service life of the finish and reduces maintenance frequency.

Built to Your Specs

The following are common customization options for Protank's Alodine treatment tanks. This list is not exhaustive. If you need an option or service not listed below, contact us. We can likely accommodate your request or help find an alternative solution.

Material Options

Polypropylene: Known for its excellent chemical compatibility, physical tolerance, abrasion resistance, and high working temperature rating, polypropylene is our standard fabrication option for custom tanks and is well suited to Alodine applications, including trivalent (Cr(III)) and most hexavalent (Cr(VI)) chromate conversion solutions. Available in both homopolymer (PP-H) and copolymer (PP-C). Weldable from 3/16" to 1" sheet.

PVDF (Kynar): For concentrated hexavalent chromate or high temperature baths where the oxidizing load exceeds PP capability, PVDF is recommended for handling strong oxidizers, aggressive acids, and high purity applications that PP, PVC, CPVC, and HDPE are unsuitable.

HDPE and FRP: For applications involving additional chemicals, additives, or mixtures where polypropylene is unsuitable, fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) are available. Stock HDPE tanks are also available for clients who need polyethylene compatibility and customize their own.

Fitting Materials: Fittings, gaskets, valves, and other connection components are available in PVC, CPVC, PVDF, EPDM, FKM/Viton, stainless steel, and more depending on part type.

System Designs

Trivalent or hexavalent chromate: Polypropylene is compatible with both Type I hexavalent (Cr(VI)) and Type II trivalent (Cr(III)) chromate conversion solutions. Tank designs differ between the two. Cr(VI) processing requires fume containment provisions, exhaust connections, and scrubber system integration that Cr(III) systems typically do not.

Modular configurations: Customize with a modular design that matches single tank setups or multiple interconnected tanks to achieve the right level of efficiency and processing. A modular design supports future flexibility and scalability by accommodating growth or work adjustments without requiring full replacements.

Agitation Systems

Agitation, including air sparging, pump circulation, and ultrasonic, ensures uniform chemical contact across part surfaces for consistent coating quality and repeatable results. Tanks can be fitted with various pipes, valves, pumps, baffles, and installation placeholders appropriate for your specific agitation method and volume.

Tank Fittings & Equipment

Equip your tanks with fittings, valves, plugs, pumps, and sensors to meet specific workflow and compatibility needs. Tank components are available in a full range of sizes, materials, and types to meet your exact requirements.
