The resulting quality of an anodized, chromate converted, or painted aluminum surface is determined largely by what happens before the part reaches the treatment bath. Deoxidizing, the removal of the oxidized surface layer and smut deposits that form during machining, fabrication, and prior processing, is the preparation step that makes consistent coating adhesion and uniform finish quality possible. Skip it or do it wrong, and no downstream process can recover from the result. Polypropylene. Built in-house. Delivered nationwide.
Built for Aluminum Surface Preparation
Custom aluminum deoxidizer tanks are purpose built immersion tanks designed for industries that require controlled oxidation and smut removal from aluminum surfaces, often before downstream activities such as anodizing, chromate conversion coating, painting, or plating. These tanks allow consistent, uniform treatment while being precisely sized and engineered to accommodate various aluminum parts, products, and workflows.
Protank builds custom polypropylene aluminum deoxidizer tanks engineered for your specific deoxidizing solutions, part dimensions, and process line setup. For industries that must maintain or achieve pristine aluminum surfaces, a Protank custom deoxidizer tank provides a reliable, long lasting solution that supports your quality standards and throughput goals. We also build the adjacent alkaline wash, rinse, and alodine treatment tanks for a single source complete aluminum finishing line.

Common Deoxidizer Agents
Aluminum deoxidizers are acidic solutions that dissolve the oxidized surface layer and smut deposits from aluminum, leaving a clean, reactive surface primed for downstream finishing. Tank material selection, fitting specifications, and containment configurations are reviewed on a per-chemical/application basis before fabrication begins.
| Agent | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Nitric Acid | Commonly used for desmutting and brightening aluminum surfaces. Widely used across alloy types. Common first stage in two-step deoxidizing systems for 2xxx and 7xxx series alloys. |
| Ferric Sulfate | Used in deoxidizer formulation combinations for smut removal in specific alloys, often used with sulfuric acid. |
| Sulfuric Acid | Used in etch and deox solutions, and often combined with nitric acid or ferric sulfate depending on alloy type and target surface condition. |
| Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) | For alloys with silicon content. HF requires specific material compatibility review for fittings, seals, and containment due to the chemical's hazard profile. |

Built From the Right Materials
Process tank construction materials are selected to match service needs and conditions, and will consider the specific deoxidizer chemical, concentration, operating temperatures and ranges. Most aluminum deoxidizing solutions can be well served by polypropylene. When chemical properties or working temps exceed PP capability, the tank build must match material accordingly. Protank fabricates from a full weldable range, including PP-H, PP-C, PVC, CPVC, HDPE, and PVDF, in sheet stock from 3/16″ to 1″, joined by bead and extrusion welding. Tank material selection, fitting specifications, and containment configurations are reviewed per-application before work begins.

Built to Your Specs
Every Protank deoxidizer tank is built in-house, made to your chemical workflow, part dimensions, and process line layout. The following are common options. Contact us if your application has requirements not listed here.
Tank dimensions are typically driven by the quantity and size of the aluminum parts being processed. Protank can build to accommodate components from small precision hardware up to large assemblies that belong to bigger structural products. Tank shapes and layouts are also configurable to the measurements and spatial constraints your facility requires.
Tell us your largest workpiece and we’ll engineer the tank dimensions around it—or tell you upfront if the job requires a different approach.
For two step deoxidizing processes, Protank can supply matched tank sets with sizing for each work stage, with rinse tanks between stages sized and setup to function as an integrated system. (See also: Custom Overflow & Rinse Tanks.)
We offer fully customizable inlet, outlet, drainage, and venting configurations so tanks can be seamlessly integrated into existing setups, work conditions, and process needs.
- Bulkheads, valves, bolted fittings, flanges, and pumps in the type, size, and location your job needs
- Tank stands and elevation frames for gravity drain, fork access, or work height positioning
- Specialized connections and unique layout arrangements to match your current system piping
- Ductwork connections for fume handling setups in jobs involving vapor generated chemicals
- Ports for personalized work needs and accessories: mixers, sensors, monitoring equipment
- External reinforcement: For large capacity baths, tall sidewalls, or tanks carrying heavy liquid loads, external structural reinforcement is available, including Ribs, steel girth bands, or I-beam framing PP encased, tank integrated for added rigidity and load support.
- Agitation systems: Equipment or connections for air sparging, pump circulation, or mechanical agitation to achieve even chemical distribution and consistent deoxidizing contact
- Level monitoring: For precise inventory management and bath process control; level gauges, electronic level sensors
- Heat tracing: For temperature sensitive or heat dependent deoxidizing formulas that utilize elevated liquid temps for optimal performance
- Insulation: Often paired with heat tracing, insulation helps solutions maintain temperatures and helps protect against UV exposure
- Vent lines & fume connections: For use with fume scrubber systems, acid vapor capture, and OSHA compliance
- Spill protection & secondary containment: Add containment bases, drip trays, and double wall designs to improve safety and comply with applicable regulations
- Rinse tank pairing: Deoxidizing is always followed by a water rinse stage; Protank can supply the rinse tanks to match your deoxidizer tank and customize overflow weirs to match

Regulatory Compliance & Safety Design
Aluminum deoxidizing operations that use nitric acid, sulfuric acid, or hydrofluoric acid are subject to multiple regulatory standards that vary based on the strength of the chemicals/solutions and how they are managed. Protank can build and customize tanks to support the necessary compliance guidance each stage requires, from active bath containment to waste stream neutralization and management.
