Custom Aluminum Deoxidizer Tanks

The resulting quality of an anodized, chromate converted, or painted aluminum surface is determined largely by what happens before the part reaches the treatment bath. Deoxidizing, the removal of the oxidized surface layer and smut deposits that form during machining, fabrication, and prior processing, is the preparation step that makes consistent coating adhesion and uniform finish quality possible. Skip it or do it wrong, and no downstream process can recover from the result. Polypropylene. Built in-house. Delivered nationwide.

Built for Aluminum Surface Preparation

Custom aluminum deoxidizer tanks are purpose built immersion tanks designed for industries that require controlled oxidation and smut removal from aluminum surfaces, often before downstream activities such as anodizing, chromate conversion coating, painting, or plating. These tanks allow consistent, uniform treatment while being precisely sized and engineered to accommodate various aluminum parts, products, and workflows.

Protank builds custom polypropylene aluminum deoxidizer tanks engineered for your specific deoxidizing solutions, part dimensions, and process line setup. For industries that must maintain or achieve pristine aluminum surfaces, a Protank custom deoxidizer tank provides a reliable, long lasting solution that supports your quality standards and throughput goals. We also build the adjacent alkaline wash, rinse, and alodine treatment tanks for a single source complete aluminum finishing line.

01

Oxidation & Smut Removal

Dissolves the aluminum oxide layer and smut deposits that accumulate during machining, forming, and prior processing to leave a clean, reactive surface primed for anodizing, chromate conversion, painting, or plating.
02

Coating Adhesion

A properly deoxidized aluminum surface is a prerequisite for uniform, consistent anodize thickness, chromate conversion adhesion, and reliable paint or primer bonding. Surfaces that aren’t properly prepared cannot be recovered by a downstream process.
03

Corrosion Resistance

Thorough deoxidizing allows downstream coatings to perform as intended, including lasting corrosion protection in environments involving salt, humidity, UV cycling, and temperature variation.
04

Alloy-Specific Control

For 2xxx and 7xxx alloys commonly used in aerospace applications, tanks can be built as two step systems with a nitric acid desmut stage followed by a sulfuric or chromic acid etch, plus rinse tanks for each stage.
05

Process Repeatability

Production runs and batch-to-batch variability can benefit from custom tank sizing, built-together rinse systems, and controlled chemical distribution rather than equipment that wasn't designed for the job as it drives consistent, repeatable results.

Common Deoxidizer Agents

Aluminum deoxidizers are acidic solutions that dissolve the oxidized surface layer and smut deposits from aluminum, leaving a clean, reactive surface primed for downstream finishing. Tank material selection, fitting specifications, and containment configurations are reviewed on a per-chemical/application basis before fabrication begins.

Agent Typical Use
Nitric Acid Commonly used for desmutting and brightening aluminum surfaces. Widely used across alloy types. Common first stage in two-step deoxidizing systems for 2xxx and 7xxx series alloys.
Ferric Sulfate Used in deoxidizer formulation combinations for smut removal in specific alloys, often used with sulfuric acid.
Sulfuric Acid Used in etch and deox solutions, and often combined with nitric acid or ferric sulfate depending on alloy type and target surface condition.
Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) For alloys with silicon content. HF requires specific material compatibility review for fittings, seals, and containment due to the chemical's hazard profile.
Polypropylene is the standard construction material for aluminum deoxidizer tanks and is compatible with most common deoxidizer agents, including nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and ferric sulfate combinations. HF applications require individual review of fittings, seals, liner options, and secondary containment before a build is approved. Contact us with your chemistry and we'll confirm compatibility upfront.

Where Deoxidizing Gets Specified

Protank serves industries wherever consistent aluminum surface preparation is a prerequisite for coating quality, specification compliance, or product performance.

Automotive

Aluminum deoxidizer tanks are used in automotive manufacturing, maintenance, and refurbishing to remove oxidation from aluminum parts. This is done to ensure clean, reactive surfaces for pre-paint, pre-coat, and pre-assembly preparation of finishing and improve overall component performance and lifespan. From engine housings and body panels to structural castings and HVAC parts, custom oxidation removal tanks support the production of high quality aluminum parts for modern vehicles.

Aerospace

In aerospace, accuracy and precision mean trust, trust in the product and trust in the performance, and custom deoxidizer tanks meet that demand by allowing essential aluminum components to be properly prepared for manufacturing, coating, or assembly. Through consistent oxidation and smut removal, these tanks support the production of lightweight, corrosion resistant parts that meet the industry’s high safety and performance standards. For 2xxx and 7xxx alloys commonly used in aerospace applications, tanks can be configured as two step systems with a nitric acid desmut stage followed by a sulfuric or chromic acid etch, plus rinse tanks for each stage.

Metal Fabrication

Metal fabrication jobs, anodizing, chemical etching, plating, and chromate conversion coating, all require clean, oxidation free aluminum surfaces to reach proper adhesion and coating quality. Deoxidizing is the final preparation step before anodizing that directly determines coating uniformity, thickness consistency, and lasting corrosion resistance. Custom aluminum deoxidizer tanks, due to project size matching and accessory customization, offer uniform, thorough treatment for stronger adhesion, superior coating quality, and a better overall finish for fabricated aluminum products.

Military & Defense

Defense manufacturers frequently require aluminum deoxidizing as a pre-treatment step before alodine treatment, anodizing, or painting of structural and avionic components. Protank can build tanks to support the documentation and material traceability needs that often accompany military and defense fabrication, including MIL-spec process line setups.

General Manufacturing

For production workflows involving aluminum parts, such as extrusions, housings, brackets, and structural components, deoxidizer tanks provide consistent surface preparation before anodizing, coating, or adhesive bonding. From machinery components to building elements, they support aluminum finishing with repeatable quality and straightforward integration into existing manufacturing lines.

Electronics Manufacturing

In electronics manufacturing, aluminum alloys used to make heat sinks, enclosures, and connectors must be cleaned to remove oxidation before coatings, adhesives, or conductive finishes are applied. Oxidation on aluminum surfaces blocks adhesion and weakens conductivity performance. Deoxidizing removes the barrier so coatings and finishes bond and perform reliably in finished assemblies.

Renewable Energy

Aluminum deoxidizer tanks have a role in the surface preparation of solar panel frames, wind turbine components, and battery enclosures that will be exposed to UV, moisture cycling, and outdoor weathering. Deoxidizing removes the oxidized surface layer to ensure proper adhesion of anodizing or specialty protective coatings that are essential for long term corrosion resistance.

Medical Devices

Surface treatment of medical-grade aluminum is used to achieve the pristine, oxidation free surfaces required before biocompatible anodizing, adhesive bonding in composite prosthetics, or passivation to ensure sterilization capacity and reliable integration with other materials in surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, and implants.

Food & Beverage

In food processing equipment, packaging, and storage, deoxidizer tanks are used to prepare aluminum contact surfaces before they are anodized or coated. The goal: remove oxidation and prep finishes so end products can meet FDA and 3-A sanitary standards for food contact surfaces and clean-in-place requirements.

Marine

Aluminum deoxidizer tanks are used to prepare hull components, structural panels, and marine accessories for anodizing or marine grade coatings. Effective deoxidizing removes the oxidized surface layer that saltwater, humidity, and UV exposure would otherwise accelerate and enables proper coating adhesion for long term corrosion resistance in saltwater environments.

Custom Machining & Tooling

These tanks remove oxidation from precision fixtures, tooling plates, jigs, and machined components to ensure a clean, consistent surface for downstream treatments, including plating, coating, and bonding, where surface condition directly affects adhesion and finish quality.

Built From the Right Materials

Process tank construction materials are selected to match service needs and conditions, and will consider the specific deoxidizer chemical, concentration, operating temperatures and ranges. Most aluminum deoxidizing solutions can be well served by polypropylene. When chemical properties or working temps exceed PP capability, the tank build must match material accordingly. Protank fabricates from a full weldable range, including PP-H, PP-C, PVC, CPVC, HDPE, and PVDF, in sheet stock from 3/16″ to 1″, joined by bead and extrusion welding. Tank material selection, fitting specifications, and containment configurations are reviewed per-application before work begins.

Tank Body: Standard

Polypropylene (PP-H / PP-C)

The standard construction material for most aluminum deoxidizing service, with good resistance to non-oxidizing acids and caustics, plus abrasion resistance, impact strength, and high temperature tolerance. Available in PP-H for higher temp rigidity and PP-C for impact and stress crack resilience. Strong oxidizers, such as concentrated nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, require a compatibility-review.
PP-H / PP-C Non-oxidizing acids Impact strength Precision weld
Aggressive Service

PVDF (Kynar)

The construction material specified for strong oxidizers, aggressive acids, elevated temperatures, and high purity applications beyond PP, PVC, CPVC, or HDPE material capabilities. When your process conditions call for it, PVDF can be specified as the tank construction material or as a PVDF liner over a structural substrate.
Strong oxidizers Aggressive acids Elevated temp Solid or liner
Fittings & Components

Chemically Matched Fittings

Tank fittings and components are available in PP, PVC, CPVC, PVDF, EPDM, and FKM/Viton in various designs to match chemical compatibility and job set use case needs. Secondary containment basins, pans, etc. can be built in available sheet material when spill/leak prevention is recommended or regulation required.

HF Applications

Hydrofluoric Acid: Compatibility Review Required

HF requires specific material compatibility review for fittings, seals, and containment due to the chemical's lethal hazard profile. PVDF is often the best choice at concentration, but the correct build should be scoped and confirmed per application by company's engineer or team. Protank will cross-check chemical, concentration, and temperature requirements prior to fabrication.
